Show exhibition essayThe intersection between colour and line has always been at the vibrating core of Michael Johnson’s painting. From his inception as a leading hard edge Colour Field artist in the early 60s, his work progressed into an intense brand of lyrical abstraction. Over the past two decades his work has swung between the extremes of restraint and release. This show pays homage to the limitless fertility of geometric form. Each study is a concentrated exercise in chromatic tension and structural contrast. The culmination of seven decades of studio discipline and a rigorous yet joyous distillation of the natural world.
