Daniel Boyd was born in Cairns in 1982 and now lives and works in Sydney.

Boyd engages with the tradition of history painting, reinterpreting archival sources, historical situations and events and reimagining British colonial and Indigenous interaction. Recently he has come to work more with abstract modes of painting; borrowing from Indigenous mark making and 'over-painting' to obscure and re-purpose images, his paintings continue to explore the fragmented nature of history and memory.

In 2014 Boyd was the recipient of the Bulgari Art Award for contemporary Australian painting, hosted by the Art Gallery of NSW. In 2013 Artspace, Sydney held the major solo exhibition 'Daniel Boyd: History is Made at Night' and, 'Daniel Boyd: A Darker Shade of Dark' was presented by the Glasshouse Port Macquarie Regional Gallery, Port Macquarie. In 2012 the Natural History Museum, London exhibited the 'Up In Smoke Tour', a major body of work produced by Boyd in response to the Museum's anthropological collection.

Other important exhibitions for the artist include 'Post-Picasso: Contemporary Reactions', Museu Picasso, Barcelona, 2014; 'Under the sun: the Kate Challis RAKA Award', Ian Potter Museum of Art, Melbourne, 2013; 'Future Primitive', Heide Museum of Modern Art, Melbourne; The 7th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (APT 7), Queensland Art Gallery GoMA, 2012; 'Culture warriors', the National Indigenous Art Triennial, curated by Brenda L. Croft, National Gallery of Australia, Canberra, 2007 which toured nationally to 2009 when it was shown at the Katzen Arts Center in Washington D.C.; 'Contemporary Australia: Optimism', Gallery of Modern Art, Brisbane, 2008; 'Lines in the Sand - Botany Bay Stories From 1770', Hazelhurst Regional Gallery, 2008 and, 'If you see something say something', Gallery 4A, Sydney, 2007 and 'Right Here Right Now', National Gallery of Australia, 2006.
